Bhakra Nangal project is committed for nation’s development. It has a capacity of generating 1478.72 MW of electric power. It’s major role is to utilize the water of Sutlej for irrigation purposes.
It covers an area of 10 million acres of land in the states of Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, and Rajasthan. The Bhakra Nangal dam serves as a multi-purpose project in terms of tourism and agriculture spectrum.
The aim of the project is to provide ample amounts of water for irrigation to the adjoining states of Punjab, Rajasthan, and Himachal Pradesh.
The project comprises of –
1. Two dams at Bhakra and Nangal
2. Nangal Hydel Channel
3. Power houses with a combined installed capacity of 1,204 megawatt (M.W.)
4. Electric transmission lines
5. Bhakra Canal system
Seventy million man-days have been used to construct the canals of the Bhakra Nangal project.This project has helped in obtaining 1.3 million tonnes of food grains a year.
Note: This is the main reservoir which is 80 km long and 8 km wide. After Guru Govind Singh, the tenth guru of the Sikh Community, this reservoir was named as Govind Sagar Lake.
