In the given question we have to solve the given quadratic equation using the quadratic formula. That is \[x = \dfrac{{ - b \pm \sqrt {{b^2} - 4ac} }}{{2a}}\].

Given, \[{x^2} - 8x - 4 = 0\].
On comparing the given equation with the standard quadratic equation \[a{x^2} + bx + c = 0\]. We get, \[a = 1\], \[b = - 8\] and \[c = - 4\].
Substituting in the formula of standard quadratic, \[x = \dfrac{{ - b \pm \sqrt {{b^2} - 4ac} }}{{2a}}\].
\[ \Rightarrow x = \dfrac{{ - ( - 8) \pm \sqrt {{{( - 8)}^2} - 4(1)( - 4)} }}{{2(1)}}\]
\[ \Rightarrow x = \dfrac{{8 \pm \sqrt {64 + 16} }}{2}\]
(We know that the product of two negative numbers gives us a positive number.)
\[ \Rightarrow x = \dfrac{{8 \pm \sqrt {80} }}{2}\]
we can write 80 as \[80 = 16 \times 5\]
